Porsche has confirmed that it will host the global reveal of the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo at this year’s Auto Show in Los Angeles.
The sportster from Stuttgart is a 680 horsepower plug-in wagon hewn from the finest unobtanium and priced at $189,000. Its powertrain is comprised of a 550-horsepower 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, a 136-horsepower electric motor, and a 14.1 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery. The prodigious power is run through Porsche’s eight-speed PDK gearbox.
Porsche bills the Sport Turismo as the new flagship of the Panamera model line, with a large tailgate and voluminous cargo capacity offering a high degree of practicality. Any machine that carry five people, a brace of schnauzers, and reach 60 mph in 3.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 192mph is fine with us. That the car is hybrid powered only adds to its appeal.
The new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo utilizes a boost strategy derived from the 918 Spyder. With an eye on performance, Porsche is treating the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo to standard ceramic composite brakes, active suspension system, and the Sport Chrono package.
Once you leave the race track and head for city streets, the E-Hybrid system can be switched to electric mode, providing an estimated 30 miles of range. Keep in mind that Porsche has played up these ratings in the past and they generally turn out to be unrealistic, especially if they are based on the New European Driving Cycle.
The electric motor is powered via the liquid-cooled battery and is estimated to take 12 hours to fully charge via a common 120 V, 10 amp connection. If the optional 7.2-kW on-board charger is utilized instead of the standard 3.6-kW unit, Porsche says the charging time decreases to less than three hours with a 240 volt 40-amp connection.
Charging can also be initiated using a timer via Porsche Communication Management or the Porsche Connect app (for smartphones and Apple Watch).
